Lot Size, PIP & PIP Value

When trading Forex, understanding lot sizes, pips, and pip value is crucial for risk management and profitability. Let’s break down these concepts using EUR/USD, USD/JPY, and XAU/USD as examples.

Lot Size :

A lot refers to the volume of a trade. The standard lot sizes in Forex are:

  • Standard Lot = 100,000 units of the base currency

  • Mini Lot = 10,000 units

  • Micro Lot = 1,000 units

For example, if you open 1 standard lot of EUR/USD, you are buying or selling 100,000 euros.

PIP :

A pip(percentage in points) is the smallest price movement in most currency pairs, typically the fourth decimal place (0.0001).

For pairs like USD/JPY, which are quoted to two decimal places, a pip is the second decimal place (0.01).

Examples of Pip Movement:

  • EUR/USD moves from 1.0800 to 1.0805 → 5 pips

  • USD/JPY moves from 150.00 to 150.10 → 10 pips

  • XAU/USD (Gold) moves from 2000.00 to 2001.50 → 150 pips (Gold’s pip movement is 0.10 per pip)

PIP Value :

The pip value tells us how much money each pip movement is worth.

The formula is:

Pip Value=One Pip/Exchange Rate×Lot Size

EUR/USD (Exchange Rate = 1.0800)

EURO(Base Currency)

US Dollars(Quote currency)

  • 1 Standard Lot (100,000 units): 0.0001/1.0800×100,000=$9.26 per pip

  • 1 Mini Lot (10,000 units) = $0.93 per pip

USD/JPY (Exchange Rate = 150.00)

US Dollars(Base Currency)

Japanese yen(Quote currency)

  • 1 Standard Lot (100,000 units): 0.01/150.00×100,000=$6.67 per pip

  • 1 Mini Lot (10,000 units) = $0.67 per pip

XAU/USD (Gold, where 1 pip = 0.10 price movement)

XAU - Gold(Metal)

US Dollars(Quote currency)

  • 1 Standard Lot (100 ounces):

    1 pip=$10 per pip

  • 1 Mini Lot (10 ounces) = $1 per pip

Understanding lot sizes and pip values helps traders manage risk effectively.

For example:trading 1 standard lot of EUR/USD means each pip movement is worth $9.26. while a standard lot of gold (XAU/USD) has a pip value of $10. Before entering a trade. Always calculate your potential gains/losses based on your lot size and risk tolerance.
